Jana Yasin Qudaih and Jana Qudaih

Khan Younis

Jana Qudaih: two martyred children, one name! Death takes many forms in the Gaza Strip. Between Jana Yasin Qudaih, who died from her wounds after an Israeli bombing in Khan Younis, and the other Jana Qudaih, who was martyred by starvation—the tragedy is one, and the story of lost childhood is one as well. In Gaza, death is measured by the rockets that hit the bodies of its people. Jana Yasin Qudaih's childhood was ended by a missile, after she had already arranged her wishes and drawn a childlike future in her mind, free from death, war, and bombing. As for Jana Qudaih, who was martyred by starvation, she wished only to eat her favorite food, even just once during the war. The occupation stole the two girls' dreams, childhood, and food. It stole everything their families had built there, and left Jana, and Jana, two martyrs searching for a childhood beneath the rubble.
