Abd al-Rahman Jaser Hamid Abu Musa

Abd al-Rahman Jaser Hamid Abu Musa

Age 8

He was killed alongside his mother, whom he went with so he would not have to cry at her departure; his older brother, the polite and diligent young man who was his role model; and his cousin, who was his childhood companion on earth and now is in heaven. As for this most special of souls, Abd al-Rahman, he was the last grape in his father's bunch, our sweetest one. He was eight years old, intelligent, bright, and full of light humor. Will you not return to our gatherings and greet us, saying, "As-salamu alaykum"? And when you saw we were busy, you would get our attention again by asking, "Did I say As-salamu alaykum?" If you have ever missed seeing a child write his own obituary, here is Abd al-Rahman. The last thing he wrote on his childish account was God's promise to those killed in His cause: that they are alive with their Lord, receiving provision. O living one who is receiving provision, soothe Yousef's loneliness. For you all, my love, departed as a group, while he departed alone. Rejoice in Paradise. Peace be upon you.
