Jumana Alaa al-Qatta

Jumana Alaa al-Qatta

Age 13 · 27 November 2023

She was killed at the age of 16, alongside her younger sister, 13-year-old Balsam Alaa al-Qatta, after their home was targeted by the occupation. Jumana had a constant laugh, a cheerful and bright face, and a kind heart. Everyone loved her for her spontaneity and her smile. She loved everyone in return, and always told them how much she loved them. Jumana was an outstanding student, both in her grades and her learning, and in her polite and well-mannered treatment of everyone without exception. She was beloved by all: her teachers, friends, and classmates. Jumana was part of the Quran memorization circles at their neighborhood mosque, the historic al-Mahatta Mosque. Her dream was to complete memorizing the book of God Almighty, to delight her parents and make them happy. Whenever she memorized a sura and completed a juz' [a section of the Quran], her enthusiasm to finish grew. She would run towards me, smiling, so happy the world could barely contain her joy. She always told me how dearly she loved our teacher, and that it was thanks to her that she was so dedicated to memorization. She sought to make her teacher happy, because she worked so hard with everyone to graduate a group of huffaz [those who have memorized the Quran].
